Fire Department to distribute free smoke alarms this weekend

October 26,2023

The Enterprise Fire Department will distribute free working smoke alarms to those living within city limits this Saturday, Oct. 28 at Enterprise City Hall.

The smoke alarm distribution event will start at 9 a.m. and last until noon.  EFD personnel, along with Coffee County Community Emergency Response Team (CC-CERT) volunteers will go door-to-door to roughly 250 homes in surrounding neighborhoods to offer free smoke alarms and installation.

“October is fire prevention month, and this is just one way we can make sure our community is prepared,” Enterprise Fire Department Battalion Chief Brian Beasley said. “We know that smoke alarms save lives, and our goal is for every home in the City of Enterprise to have a working smoke alarm.  If you need one, come get one and tell us if you need it installed. We will gladly do that to make sure you and your family are protected.”

In addition to having smoke alarms, Beasley, who oversees Community Risk Reduction, says that families also need to plan and practice a fire escape route.

“We recommend that you designate a spot like a tree, mailbox or light pole and make sure everyone in your family knows about the meeting spot.  Practice your fire escape plan at least twice a year, once during the day and once at night,” Beasley said.

He said it’s also important to check the smoke alarms and familiarize yourself with the sound it makes in an emergency.  Beasley recommends testing the alarms monthly and changing the batteries at least twice a year.

“With the time change coming up, that’s a good reminder for us all to change the batteries in our smoke alarms when we change our clocks.”
